AN ACT TO AMEND THE NAME CHANGE ACT, 2023

Incorporated into Bill 223, Safer Streets, Stronger Communities Act, 2024 – Royal Assent Received

Thornhill – “I’m pleased to share that my Private Members Bill with MPP Laurie Scott, Bill 138, the Change of Name Amendment Act, 2023 has been incorporated into The Safer Streets, Stronger Communities Act, 2024. This legislation will strengthen community safety by preventing sex offenders from changing their names.” – Laura Smith, MPP – Thornhill

The Bill amends the Change of Name Act to provide that certain offenders are ineligible to apply to change their name. The offenders who are ineligible are those who are required to comply with Christopher’s Law (Sex Offender Registry), 2000.

Consequential amendments are made to Christopher’s Law (Sex Offender Registry), 2000.

NEWS RELEASE: October 18, 2023

QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Laurie Scott, Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes—Brock, and MPP Laura Smith, Thornhill, tabled a joint Private Member’s Bill today to stop convicted offenders under Christopher’s Law from legally changing their names in Ontario. This bill, if passed, will prevent sex offenders who have committed horrific crimes from being able to hide their identities.
