Meet Laura Smith
Laura Smith was first elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Thornhill in June 2022 and re-elected in February 2025. She currently serves as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
Laura is a passionate advocate for her community, with a strong focus on supporting youth, seniors, and vulnerable populations. She is a vocal opponent of antisemitism and hate, and has worked closely with the government to implement tools and initiatives that help keep communities safe.
With a deep understanding of the challenges faced by families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia, Laura champions increased awareness and support. She introduced and successfully passed Bill 121, the Improving Dementia Care in Ontario Act—legislation designed to better equip healthcare providers, care partners, and families to care for individuals living with dementia.
Laura also played a key role in advancing Bill 138, the Change of Name Act, which was incorporated into the Safer Streets, Stronger Communities Act, 2024. She worked closely with her colleague, MPP Laurie Scott, to strengthen the provisions of Christopher’s Law by ensuring that sex offenders are ineligible to apply for a legal name change—further enhancing public safety and accountability.
In addition, Laura brought forward Motion 90 – Protecting Our Students from Hate, which aims to hold colleges and universities accountable for ensuring student safety on campus, particularly in response to incidents of hate and discrimination.
A proud Thornhill resident for over 25 years, Laura is actively involved in local life. She serves as a Director with the Thornhill Thunder Soccer Club and is a former Vice President of a local co-operative nursery school. A dedicated volunteer, Laura is also an avid swimmer and enthusiastic soccer mom.
