MPP Laura Smith & MPP Stephen Lecce Recognize Ontario Government Investment to Upgrade Schwartz/Reisman Centre in Maple

$162,000 Capital Grant was used to add accessibility upgrades to the Fitness Space

THORNHILL – On Sunday, Laura Smith, MPP for Thornhill and Stephen Lecce, MPP for King—Vaughan announced that renovations for accessibility upgrades at the Schwartz/Reisman Centre (SRC) Fitness Centre are now complete. The upgrades were made possible by a $162,000 Capital Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) that was awarded last summer to create an accessible fitness space for individuals with mobility challenges. MPP Smith joined MPP Lecce at the Schwartz/Reisman Centre’s annual Purim Palooza event, the largest in the Toronto area, to recognize this investment from the Ontario Government with local families. 

“Our government remains committed to helping seniors and adults with special needs stay fit, active, healthy, and socially connected within their communities,” said Laura Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thornhill. “This investment is about more than just fitness space and equipment. It’s about ensuring everyone, including our most vulnerable, has a welcoming and accessible space to move, connect, and lead active and engaged lives.”

This capital project has made it possible to have a versatile accessible fitness space for seniors and other adults with mobility and special needs to help restore independence and improve health. The SRC is a central hub of engagement in Vaughan, and this project will help enhance its important work providing wellness programs and services that improve quality of life for individuals who require an enhanced accessible space for their full participation in fitness programs. Participation in group exercise programs will help them engage socially, improving their emotional and physical health.

“I was proud to join families to recognizing this investment in the Schwartz/Reisman Centre—helping transform their fitness space to be an accessible, reliable and modern space that all residents can enjoy,” said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King—Vaughan. “Keeping our community healthy and active is a key priority for our government as we continue making targeted investments to ensure King and Vaughan’s public spaces and community infrastructure — such as opening the new Seniors Room at the Nobleton Arena and the soon-to-be-open Seniors Active Living Centre at Reena Residence beside the Schwartz/Reisman Centre — remain accessible for everyone.”

This grant enabled SRC to renovate a fitness space so that more members of the community can move, strengthen, and connect in a setting that feels safe and supportive. The project includes installing non-slip flooring, balance bars, and automatic door access to increase physical accessibility. Updated lighting and adjustable audio will help accommodate a range of sensory needs.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Ontario government with a mission to build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Last year, OTF invested nearly $105M into 732 community projects and multi-sector partnerships. Projects aim to enhance economic well-being, foster more active lifestyles, support child and youth development, provide spaces for people to come together and connect, and create a more sustainable environment.
