Seniors Active Living Centres keeps seniors fit, active and healthy
THORNHILL — Today, Laura Smith, MPP for Thornhill, announced that through Ontario’s $12,500 start-up investment and ongoing funding of up to $55,000 per year, the government is launching a new Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) Program in Thornhill.
“I’m very happy to see this investment because it supports our incredible group of seniors here in Thornhill.” Said Laura Smith, MPP for Thornhill. “Seniors built our communities and this investment is about supporting them because we know that staying active plays a key role in maintaining health, mobility, and independence.”
“This is an exciting day for everyone in Thornhill,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “This new Reena Seniors Active Living Centre program will support older adults—particularly those with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges—in living healthy, independent lives.” This new Reena SALC is one of Ontario’s 97 new SALC programs. This increases the number of programs to 413 across the province.
“This is for the greatest generation—our parents and grandparents who sacrificed so much to build this country—and a better life for their children.” Said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King— Vaughan. “I am proud to deliver one of Ontario’s new Seniors Active Living Centres, right in the heart of our community—helping seniors stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected.” SALC programs help seniors stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected through social, cultural, educational and recreational programming. Seniors and caregivers can use the online search tool to find a program in their community.
“Helping older adults thrive through connection is at the heart of this program. At Reena, we believe no one should feel they are aging alone”, said Bryan Keshen, CEO, Reena. “This Seniors Active Living Centre will create a welcoming, fully accessible space where adults 55, some with developmental disabilities, can build friendships, stay active, and enjoy the dignity, independence, and sense of belonging that come from being part of a caring community.”
The new Reena Seniors Active Living Centre program offers a wide range of programs specifically designed for seniors with developmental and mental health challenges.
This includes recreational, educational, and wellness activities, including yoga, music, swimming, health workshops, and gardening. Participants can enjoy a warm, inclusive environment with snacks, flexible participation options, and affordable membership fees.
The Ontario government continues to invest in SALCs programs that encourage social connection, support health and wellness, and promote community inclusion for all seniors.
