Seniors Active Living Centres keeps seniors fit, active and healthy

THORNHILL — Today, MPP Laura Smith announced the new Reena Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) in Thornhill. This is one of the up to 100 new SALC programs opening across the province this year to help improve seniors’ quality of life and build community engagement. Reena is receiving $55,000 from the Ontario government to support their Seniors Active Living Centre.

“Seniors Active Living Centres improve the lives of Ontario’s seniors by providing exceptional activities and services,” said Laura Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thornhill. “Our government remains committed to helping seniors stay fit, active, healthy, and socially connected within their communities. Reena has demonstrated year over year a strong dedication to supporting our seniors, and I’m confident the new Reena Seniors Active Living Centre will continue that legacy and serve as a valuable resource for our community for years to come.”

The government’s 2024 Fall Economic Statement increased base funding for all Seniors Active Living Centres, from up to $42,700 to up to $55,000 to ensure centres have the support they need to continue providing seniors services and activities. The funding is provided to centres in four equal quarterly payments each year.

“Thanks to Premier Ford and our entire government, we will continue to invest and expand activities and services to more seniors across Ontario,” said, Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “Seniors Active Living Centres are the best investment to fight social isolation, keep our seniors fit, active, healthy and socially connected.”

SALCs bring seniors together to be with old friends and meet with new friends providing on going recreational, social and lifestyle activities.

“At Reena, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusive communities where every individual can thrive. The Active Living and Wellness Program for Seniors is a powerful extension of that mission—offering a welcoming, engaging, and supportive environment for older adults, especially those with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. This program promotes health, connection, and dignity for all seniors, empowering them to live with purpose and belonging. We are sincerely grateful to the Government of Ontario for its investment in the well-being of older adults through the Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) program. This support enables us to launch and expand vital programming that enhances quality of life, reduces isolation, and supports aging with dignity and independence for seniors of all abilities.”
